Rifugio Schiazzera

The hut, owned by the Municipality of Vervio (SO), has been obtained by the refurbishment occured in 1997 of a former Financial Police barrack. The presence of a Financial Police barrack in this area comes as no surprise, because upper Val Saiento allows a relatively easy pass to Valle di Poschiavo (through the so called Portone Pass) and to the nearby Valle Piana, lateral in respect to western Val Grosina, where the transfer is again possible with ease through different routes to Valle di Poschiavo; it explains the transit, during the years of contraband, of “smugglers” along these trails and the counteraction conducted by Financial agents.
Schiazzera Hut is completely managed by volunteers contributing to the fundraising to support the missions of Mato Grosso Operation in Latin America Latina and in support of the several charities conducted by many laic missionaries and priests in the various O.M.G. Expeditions.
